1 dead, 10 wounded in shootings since Thursday evening

Sept. 18--A man has died and at least 10 other people have been injured in shootings since Thursday evening, police said.

The fatal shooting occurred at 8:40 p.m. in the South Austin neighborhood, according to Chicago Police spokesman Officer Hector Alfaro.

A 28-year-old man was walking in the 200 block of South Laramie Avenue when two people jumped out of a white van and fired shots. He was struck in the back and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, police said. He was later pronounced dead.

The most recent shooting occurred at 12:10 a.m. Friday in the Logan Square neighborhood, said News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro, citing preliminary information.

Two women, ages 46 and 36, had just left a bar when they heard shots and felt pain. The 46-year-old woman was struck twice in the abdomen and twice in the leg; she went to Stroger Hospital and her condition has stabilized. The 36-year-old was grazed in the abdomen. She went to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

Two people are in custody in connection with the incident, police said.

Just after midnight, two men were shot in Back of the Yards, Alfaro said.

The men, ages 18 and and 36, were on the sidewalk in the 1400 block of West 48th Street when a dark sedan drove past and someone inside shot at them.

The 18-year-old was struck in the left thigh and the 36-year-old was struck in the lower right leg. Both went to Stroger Hospital and their conditions had stabilized, police said.

At 10:30 p.m., a 29-year-old woman was shot in West Pullman, said News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.

She was on a porch in the 11700 block of South Morgan Street when a gray sedan drove up and shots were fired from the car. She was struck in the left ankle and went to Roseland Hospital. Her condition was stabilized.

At 9:50 p.m., a 15-year-old boy was shot in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, police said.

He was walking in the 3900 block of West Thomas Street when someone got out of a nearby vehicle and started shooting, Alfaro said. He was struck in the lower leg and taken to Stroger Hospital. His condition was stabilized.

At 9:30 p.m., three people were wounded in a drive-by in Englewood, Alfaro said.

They were in a car in the 5700 block of South Peoria Street when a sedan drove up and its shots were fired from inside, Alfaro said.

A 24-year-old man was hit in the lower back and right leg and taken to Stroger Hospital. A second 24-year-old man was hit in the buttocks and drove himself to St. Bernard Hospital. A 25-year-old woman went to St. Bernard Hospital with a shot to her right forearm. All their conditions had stabilized.

At 7:40 p.m., a 17-year-old boy was shot in the leg in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, police said. He was in the 2800 block of West Madison Street when he was wounded in what may have been a drive-by, said police. The boy was in good condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.
