Woman and son, 6, narrowly miss drive-by shooting

Aug. 12--Shannie Seals got home from the store with her 6-year-old son, parked near her Altgeld Gardens home on the Far South Side and went to drink a glass of wine on a bench outside. That's when she heard three gunshots.

"(I) heard the first, then a pause, then pow-pow," said Seals, 37.

A 20-year-old man had been shot in the face and chest, right next to where she had parked.

"We'd just gotten out of the car 10 minutes before," Seals said. "If I were, like, stalled or sat there a bit longer, any damn thing."

Police say the victim, identified by relatives as Marlon Dixon, was in the 700 block of East 131st Street around 10:55 p.m. Tuesday when someone in a passing SUV fired shots and then fled. He was fatally shot about two blocks from his home in the 13000 block of South Evans Avenue.

At least 10 other people were wounded by gunfire from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning, police said. Six people were wounded in a 45-minute period early Wednesday.

The men, 27 and 24, were sitting in a parked van in the 3400 block of West Roosevelt Road when a sedan pulled up and someone fired shots.

The 27-year-old was hit multiple times and taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital. The 24-year-old was shot in the arm and taken to Mount Sinai as well, where he was treated and released.

--A man, 24, was shot in the ankle in the Old Town neighborhood at 1:40 a.m., Greer said.

Police in the area heard gunshots and, upon investigation, found the man in the 400 block of West Evergreen Avenue with a gunshot wound to his ankle.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

At 1:30 a.m., the women were with a group of people on a porch in the 7800 block of South Cornell Avenue when they heard shots and felt pain, Greer said.

A 48-year-old woman was grazed in the foot and chest, and a 50-year-old woman was grazed in the chest. Both were taken to Jackson Park Hospital, where their conditions were stabilized.

--A 17-year-old boy told police he was shot in the West Garfield Park neighborhood about 11:30 p.m., Greer said.

He was standing in the 4500 block of West Madison Street when he heard shots and was wounded, Greer said. A friend took him to Norwegian American Hospital, where his condition stabilized.

That shooting happened about 4:45 p.m. in the 6500 block of West Wolcott Avenue, Trainor said.

The man was standing on the street when he was approached by two unknown men. One of the men pulled out a gun and started firing, striking the man in the abdomen, Trainor said, citing preliminary information.
