Tokyo on Thursday confirmed that 1,979 people were newly infected with the novel coronavirus.
The number increased by 671 from a week before and topped 1,800 for the second day in a row. The daily tally has now surpassed the figure from a week before for 33 consecutive days.
According to the Tokyo metropolitan government, the latest seven-day average of people newly infected was 1,373.4, an increase of 55.7% from the previous week, when the average was 882.1. The number of COVID-19 patients showing serious symptoms was 65, an increase by one from the previous day.
