Hoping to curb the spread of the new coronavirus, McDonald's Co. (Japan) on Monday stopped allowing anyone to eat inside the restaurants at about 1,910 locations in 13 prefectures designated as "special alert prefectures."

Restaurants affected by the decision will offer takeout and, if available, drive-through and delivery orders. Lasting until May 6, the restaurant operator hopes to ensure social distancing for customers and its employees.

Before the latest measure, McDonald's restaurants in Tokyo and other areas had stopped allowing customers to dine in the restaurants after 8 p.m. or the restaurants were closed.

Some customers left the McDonald's Jimbocho restaurant in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, on Monday morning after learning eating inside was no longer allowed.
