1,700 tonne Royal Navy warship docks at Scots harbour

A massive 1,700 tonne Royal Navy warship has docked at a Scots harbour.

Offshore patrol vessel HMS Severn was watched by happy onlookers as she made her way into Aberdeen harbour this morning.

The ship had been decommissioned in 2017 but brought back into service this year.

HMS Severn has capabilities and training to escort passing foreign warships, mount fishing vessel inspections and defend the UK border.

She also has an important role to play training Royal Navy navigators.

It is unclear what is behind her visit to Aberdeen today.

The city has been visited before by Navy gunboats- with destroyer HMS Diamond previously making the trip to the north-east.

Aberdeen Lord Provost Barney Crockett said he would be visiting the HMS Severn crew tomorrow morning.

He said: "We are very grateful for all the work of the Royal Navy in protecting the country.

"We have strong links and they are getting ever stronger.

"We welcome this naval presence in the city which is becoming a more common sight."

The Royal Navy has been contacted for comment.
