The cost of boiling a kettle is around 1p a minute on average at its most efficient. However, multiple cups using full kettles each day can quickly add up and contribute to rising heating bills.
For those who are keeping an eye on bills during the cost of living crisis there is a quick and easy way to keep the cost of boiling the kettle down to a minimum and it costs just £1.65. The trick is all about making sure your kettle is operating at its most efficient and removing any limescale from the appliance.
Oust All Purpose Descaler costs £1.65 for three sachets at Tesco and Sainsbury’s, or £2.95 at Amazon. The cleaning product has racked up nearly 10,000 five star reviews on Amazon, praised for being ‘quick and easy’.

One shopper said: “This stuff worked miracles on my super limescaled kettle. I was in two minds to throw it out or keep it but I tried this and all I can say is WOW!
“Absolutely brilliant. I'd definitely be buying this in future rather than buying a new kettle which I've done previously! If only I had known about this stuff before I would have used it on my iron.”
The descaler is said to restore small household appliances like kettles and irons in just 10 minutes. Sophie Herrmann, a spokesperson at Oust, explained how descaling your kettle can help you save money when making a cuppa.
She said: “Having limescale in your kettle is a common issue and affects around 60 per cent of the UK. Once hard water is heated, it creates a chalky off-white crust called limescale.
“Limescale build-up in kettles slows down their efficiency so they will use more energy to boil the same amount of water. Descale your kettle and restore your appliance in eight minutes using Oust All Purpose Descaler, which removes limescale debris on the internal coils of the kettle and maintains shorter boil times. If you live in a hard water area, descale every three months, and every six months in soft water areas.”
Sophie also recommends not overfilling your kettle, only using as much water as you need when you’re making tea or coffee to help reduce energy usage.
