1,500 fishing boats brought aground in Narathiwat

NARATHIWAT: More than 1,500 medium and small fishing boats have been brought onto the ground in several localities in this southern border province after a heavy rainstorm on Saturday night that caused sea waves to be more than 2 metres high.

It is too risky for them to take their boats out into the rough seas and strong storm.

Most of the boats have been brought onto the ground at Ban Thon in tambon Khok Khian and Ban Bale Hile in Muang district, and tambon Chehe in Tak Bai district.

The fishermen have taken this opportunity to repair and repaint their boats, before coving them with plastic sheets to protect them from rain.  They have also removed the engines and fishing equipment from their boats and brought them to their homes to prevent them from being stolen.

The boats will be brought out into the sea after the storm has declined.

The Thai Meteorological Department has predicted that rain with thunderstorms will cover 60% of the eastern coast of the South during the next 24 hours as a result of the southwest monsoon lying across the Andaman Sea, the South Region and the Gulf of Thailand.
