A record 1,413 people were seriously ill with COVID-19 nationwide on Wednesday, according to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry. The number increased by 119 from the previous day. It was the 26th day in a row, counting from May 1, that more than 1,000 COVID-19 patients showed serious symptoms.
In Okinawa Prefecture, a record 302 people were newly confirmed as having contracted the novel coronavirus on Wednesday, according to the prefectural government. The number far exceeded the previous record of 256 set on Tuesday.
In Tokyo, 743 people newly tested positive for the virus on Wednesday, according to the Tokyo metropolitan government.
It was fewer by 23 than a week earlier, making it 13 consecutive days for the daily tally to be lower than seven days before.
The weekly average for the past seven days was 607.7, or 83.5% of the average in the previous seven days, which was 727.9.
The metropolitan government also confirmed that five people in their 80s and 90s died from COVID-19 on Wednesday. Seventy patients in Tokyo showed serious symptoms, one fewer than the previous day.
