£1.3m lottery winner mansion overlooking the Clyde facing demolition

Plans for a development that could see a luxury £1.3m mansion bulldozed for flats have been met with fury from neighbours.

The massive property in Bothwell has gone up for sale offering builders the chance to transform the site overlooking the River Clyde.

The house, which was once owned by lottery winner John McGuinness after he scooped a £10m jackpot in 1996, is registered to developers Carnbroe Estates Ltd.

Plans lodged with South Lanarkshire Council show 11 flats could be created on the site that has been put up for sale at offer over £1.3m.

The development could see flats built over four floors with underground parking facilities.

But neighbours have reacted angrily to the proposals and insist the development would have an impact on traffic and parking.

They also highlighted issues caused by other local development projects.

Ann Doyle said: "I strongly object to the planning proposal of 11 flats.

"Living on Old Bothwell Road over the past three years has been a nightmare and unbearable due to the construction traffic and subcontractors parking indiscriminately all over the road and street, continually blocking the footpaths for daily life and access."

Thomas McGee added: "Although we are not against a new development we have substantial concerns relating to traffic volumes.

"With 11 new dwellings it would not be unreasonable to expect an additional 15 vehicles using a road which is already worryingly busy for its size given the recent development adjacent to the site.

"The access point to and from the site is on a blind corner with no pavements to offer pedestrian safety."

A sales brochure for the property revealed flats of varying sizes could be created with both small apartments and large luxury penthouse suites.

It says: "This exciting opportunity is open for builders to create a small and exclusive development close to the amenities of Bothwell village and is conveniently placed for road links to Glasgow, East Kilbride and the M74 going both north and south.

"The proposed development would have flats over four floors, looking over The River Clyde with under ground parking and varying in size from 848 sq ft for the smaller apartments up to 1336 sq ft for the larger penthouse apartments with healthy resale values expected.

"Alternatively a purchaser may wish to keep the current home as a private dwelling with its lovely views, great privacy and substantial gardens."

The house has a long list of former owners including McGuiness who snapped it up after his massive lottery win.

Late lapdance tycoon Billy Peterkin once rented the property out.

South Lanarkshire Council will make a ruling on the planned development in due course.
