The Tokyo metropolitan government announced that 1,278 new cases of novel coronavirus infections had been reported in Tokyo on Tuesday, the second-highest number of cases for a single day after the 1,337 cases reported on Dec. 31.
This is the highest number ever recorded on a Tuesday, surpassing the 856 cases on Dec. 29.
The number of people in serious condition increased by three from the previous day to 111, the highest number ever.
