£1.2 million congestion busting scheme to ease gridlock at M5 junction gets green light

A congestion busting scheme to ease gridlock at Weston-super-Mare's motorway junction has been given the green light.

North Somerset Council highways chiefs have approved a £1.2 million scheme to widen the northbound slip road onto the motorway at junction 21.

The work will see the existing single lane onto the motorway northbound changed to two lanes for the entire length of the slip road.

Large queues often form at peak times - particularly during the morning rush hour - as people head out of the town to work in other areas, including Bristol.

It is hoped the changes will help ease congestion and tail backs at peak times.

The work is to be carried out by Highways England.

A council spokesman said: "The work will increase vehicular capacity through junction 21 onto the motorway and help reduce congestion on the approaches to junction 21 most notably in the morning peak.

"The scheme is to be carried out by Highways England in association with other maintenance works already planned, offering significant cost savings.

"The northbound merge scheme helps relieve traffic congestion on the highway network approaching junction 21, making Weston a more desirable place to live and work."

Weston has seen massive housing growth in recent years with the development of the Weston Villages scheme.

But many of the residents commute out of the area - adding to the congestion on the roads.

Funding for the improvements has been earmarked to mitigate the effects of the growth of the seaside town.

A total of £675,000 has come from the Growth and Housing Fund while £450,000 has been earmarked from the Revolving Infrastructure Fund.

A further £112,000 has come from section 106 contributions from developers.
