Motorola said yesterday it would cut 1,000 jobs, as the company continues to refocus on its core mobile phone business.
It said some positions being cut were related to the Freescale Semiconductor division that Motorola is in the process of spinning off.
The others are in its commercial, government and industrial solutions division and broadband communica tions. The handset maker said it needed workers with "different skill sets".
The company is taking a $50m (£27.5m) severance charge. Including Freescale, Motorola employs about 88,000 people.
Motorola, which for years lagged behind its rivals in the handset business, has begun to enjoy strong momentum. In the last quarter, the firm reported $800m in pre-tax profits, up from $112m a year earlier. Handset sales in the quarter rose 67% to $3.9bn.
The company has benefited from the interest among consumers in high end phones with features such as cameras and wireless internet access.
