083 scam: Gardai share list of bogus numbers after major increase in scam calls

After a major increase in the number of scam calls being made to members of the public, Gardaí have posted a short list of bogus numbers which people should not get involved with.

The Department of Health and the Department of Social Protection have both issued warnings about a dangerous scam that has already targeted thousands of people.

It's the fourth time in the last six weeks where warnings have had to be issued as fraudsters ramp up their targeting of innocent people.

And now, Gardaí in Louth have issued a helpful list of numbers to be wary of.

A statement from the force said: "We have received reports in recent days from members of the public, who had received bogus calls purporting to be from the Department of Social Welfare seeking the persons PPS number and other personal details.

"Some of the numbers involved begin with the following digits.

  • +353 8336
  • 080066
  • 353 01 888
  • 1(647)375

"Gardaí wish to warn members of the public not to engage or share personal information. The Department of Social Welfare will never call you to ask you for your PPS number or bank details.

"Please spread the word because people of all ages and all walks of life are receiving these calls on a daily basis."

Gardai have also urged people to take caution against bogus callers who will try to swindle people out of money face to face.

They added: "Unfortunately, everyone can receive visits form bogus callers and our vulnerable persons are sometimes targeted by criminals.

"Bogus callers will say anything to get into your home or onto your property including producing false identification claiming to be there in an official capacity.

Some examples include

  • "There’s been an accident, can I call an ambulance?”
  • "I’ve broken down, can I use your phone?”
  • "I’ve had a fall, could I have a glass of water”
  • "I’m from the council, there’s a burst main, I need to turn off your supply”

"In all cases you need to be wary of strangers calling to your home. They may be offering services such as power washing, painting, selling goods etc.
