Federal immigration agents executed a large-scale raid Thursday at Glass House Farms, a licensed cannabis facility in Camarillo, California, prompting a day-long standoff with hundreds of protesters and grabbing headlines at the national level.
The operation— one of two simultaneous raids along another one in Carpinteria —unfolded as federal agents in tactical gear blocked roads, fired crowd-control munitions, and deployed gas canisters.
Protesters, family members, and former employees gathered outside the facility, with some being hit by projectiles or hospitalized due to exposure to gas. According to the Ventura County Fire Department, at least five individuals were transported to area hospitals, with others treated on site.
A witness interviewed by Telemundo, who asked not to be named, described the scene:
"They were all armed. They had long guns. Helmets and everything. They even had gas tanks. They came as if they were going to war. And they told us not to say anything, that we shouldn't tell anyone afterwards that they were mistreating us. But I'm not going to stay silent"
Federal authorities added that 10 undocumented minors were found working at the Camarillo facility, eight of whom were unaccompanied. The farm is now under investigation for potential child labor violations, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott.
U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli confirmed in a statement on X that a federal search warrant was executed at the site and warned that interfering with law enforcement could lead to prosecution.:
Federal agents are executing a search warrant at this marijuana farm. Agents have already arrested multiple individuals for impeding this operation and will continue to make arrests. Don’t interfere. You will be arrested and charged with a federal offense. https://t.co/KMwZ5WToOc

Glass House Farms confirmed the raids in a brief statement, saying the company complied with search warrants and would provide updates as needed.
As protests continued into the evening, calls for accountability grew. Rep. Salud Carbajal, turned away from the perimeter by agents, called the tactics "disproportionate," while others echoed concerns over the impact on immigrant communities. Oxnard Mayor Luis McArthur stated through a Facebook post that ICE's actions were "bold and aggressive," causing "unnecessary distress and harm."
