What Trump told USMNT before World Cup 2026 opener

  • President Donald Trump telephoned the U.S. Soccer Men’s National Team to offer encouragement ahead of their opening World Cup 2026 match against Paraguay in Los Angeles.
  • During the call, Trump told coach Mauricio Pochettino he was a "fantastic guy" and wished the team luck, stating they had a "really good chance of going all the way."
  • Although Trump will not attend Friday's match, members of his cabinet, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio , Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, will be present.
  • The State Department described the World Cup as a "landmark moment" for the Trump administration, showcasing American leadership and hospitality.
  • Trump is scheduled to attend the World Cup Final in New Jersey on 19 July and will host a UFC fight at the White House this weekend to celebrate his 80th birthday and 250 years of American independence.
