Barack Obama and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani met for the first time on Saturday 18 April at a New York child care centre.
Obama, a prominent figure in the Democratic Party, offered to serve as a sounding board for the 34-year-old mayor.
This meeting follows Mamdani's two previous discussions with President Donald Trump at the White House in November and February regarding New York City issues.
The relationship between Mamdani and Trump has recently shown strain.
Trump criticized Mamdani on Truth Social, alleging he was “DESTROYING New York” with his taxing policies and threatening to withdraw federal funding.
