Volkswagen Recalls 38,000 SUVs For Fuel Tank Issues

The Breakdown:

  • Volkswagen is recalling 38,710 Taos crossovers from the 202 and 2026 model years.
  • They might leak fuel in the event of a severe rear-end collision, which could dislodge the fuel pressure sensor.
  • The crossover has a wiring harness that is too short.

Volkswagen is recalling nearly 38,710 Taos crossovers because they might leak fuel in the event of a severe rear-end collision. The vehicles have a wiring harness for the fuel pressure sensor that is too short.

According to the recall report, the wiring harness can undergo tension during a rear-end collision, which could dislodge the sensor from the tank. If this happens, and the Taos experiences a rollover event, fuel could leak out.

VW first learned of a potential issue from Transport Canada, the country’s equivalent to the US Department of Transportation. The Canadian agency crash tested a 2025 Taos that suffered a failure, informing the automaker of its results in early March.

Volkswagen investigated the issue, even visiting Transport Canada’s facilities to inspect the vehicle, before issuing the recall. The automaker implemented a new wiring harness for the sensor that was too short for the 2025 model year, affecting 2025 and 2026 models.

Volkswagen said it is unaware of any crashes, fires, injuries, or deaths related to the issue. The automaker will fix the issue by installing a 3.15-inch wiring harness extension, which should reduce tension on the sensor in the event of a rear-end collision.

Motor1's Take: A fuel leak after a crash is a big no-no, and we are glad Volkswagen is fixing the issue.
