Utah Mom Takes Matters Into Her Own Hands, Kidnaps a Bully and Makes Them Apologize. Good For Her

A Utah mother is now facing kidnapping charges after she allegedly took her autistic son’s 11-year-old bully and kept him at her home until he apologized. Shannon Tufuga, 40, was hit with charges on Monday, following an incident that reportedly happened in early September. It’s a pretty wild story, and it’s definitely got people talking.

Charging documents detail how Tufuga allegedly went looking for the boy while he was riding his bike in his neighborhood. According to the NY Post, she reportedly confronted him and then got him into her car. All of this happened without the boy’s parents even knowing what was going on, which didn’t bode well for Shannon.

After getting the boy into her vehicle, Tufuga allegedly drove him back to her home in Provo, Utah. She reportedly kept him there until he offered an apology to her son. Even after the boy apologized, the situation didn’t end, as the police report suggests Tufuga wasn’t letting up. She allegedly threatened to have her husband beat up the boy and even said he was “lucky she did not run over his bike,” according to the documents. Eventually, Tufuga drove the boy back to his own home.

Shannon’s actions had a lasting impact on her son’s bully

The alleged kidnapping had a serious impact on the boy in the months that followed. Charging documents state that he experienced “serious emotional distress.” He now suffers from “high anxiety and has had to alter his daily routines significantly” because of the incident.

Tufuga was officially charged with child kidnapping and aggravated child abuse on Monday. Both of these are quite serious second-degree felonies. Interestingly, these charges were initially first-degree felonies but were lowered after the Utah County Attorney’s Office decided that a “reduction would be in the interests of justice.”

It turns out Tufuga’s son is on the autism spectrum, a detail she shared in a now-deleted post on her Facebook page. This context spreads awareness on autism and helps paint a fuller picture of the situation, though it doesn’t change the legal ramifications she’s now facing.
