US fires wave of Tomahawk missiles at Iran as Trump sends new warning

  • The US fired 49 Tomahawk missiles at Iran on Wednesday, marking the second consecutive day of strikes between the two nations.
  • US Central Command (Centcom) described these as 'self-defence strikes' targeting Iranian military surveillance and air defence sites.
  • In retaliation, Iran launched strikes against 18 US airbases in the Gulf region, prompting Kuwait to temporarily close its airspace and Bahrain to sound air sirens.
  • Donald Trump , the US president, stated the US would attack Iran 'very hard' unless a peace deal was finalised, following previous strikes.
  • The escalation in hostilities began earlier in the week with the downing of a US Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz.
