UK Coronavirus death toll rises by another 351

The number of deaths from coronavirus in the UK has risen again - by a further 351.

The Department of Health (DoH) has revealed its latest update on how the coroanvirus is impacting on the country.

The new deaths take the government's official total to 36,393 - although many believe this number is larger in reality.

A tweet from the DoH today said: "As of 9am 22 May, there have been 3,231,921 tests, with 140,497 tests on 21 May.

"2,144,626 people have been tested of which 254,195 tested positive. As of 5pm on 21 May, of those tested positive for coronavirus, across all settings, 36,393 have sadly died."

Earlier today Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed 24 new Covid-19 deaths in Scotland.

It brings the Scottish death toll to 2,245, while in Wales 1,254 people have died in hospital.

With the death toll still rising, the government is facing pressure to launch a fully operational test, track and trace system as soon as possible.

Ministers want to reopen schools from June 1, but accept the system will need to be in place to manage any further spread of the virus caused by the reopening.

Speaking to MPs today, Professor Yvonne Doyle, medical director of Public Health England accepted that schools will be able to make their own decisions on reopening.

She said: "The children who are being invited back to school will be young children and Year 6, and this will be on a phased basis.

"But ultimately, it will be for schools to decide whether they are ready for this and whether parents have confidence that they will send the children back."
