As deadly floods devastate New Jersey, claiming at least two lives, President Donald Trump praised the state's Republican congressman for keeping the state "beautiful" by shutting down the clean energy initiatives.
"To the many Great Americans enjoying their Summer Vacations in Atlantic City, Wildwood, and Cape May, in the wonderful State of New Jersey, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean: Remember that your Republican Congressman, and my GREAT friend, Jeff Van Drew, is fighting hard, and WINNING, to keep your Beaches BEAUTIFUL, with NO WINDMILLS," Trump wrote in a Truth Social post shared Tuesday.
"In fact, we just beat one of the biggest Windmill projects anywhere in the World," he continued. "It would have been a disaster, but they gave up because of the onslaught of 'TRUMP'/Van Drew. Great job, Jeff!"
In his social media post, President Trump highlighted several green energy projects he and Congressman Jeff Van Drew claimed to have halted, including the Biden-era Empire Wind project. The initiative was expected to generate enough renewable energy to power more than 700,000 New York homes and create over 1,000 local jobs during its construction and operation, according to the Permitting Council.
Construction on the project was officially halted in April following an executive order issued by Trump and supported by Van Drew, who criticized the Biden administration's "reckless green agenda" for prioritizing politics over people. Trump also denounced the project, claiming the wind turbines would mar the state's skyline.
Meanwhile, residential electricity prices are rising and are expected to continue increasing through 2025.
President Trump's tone-deaf praise for Van Drew's efforts to block clean energy projects came just hours after torrential rains inundated New Jersey and New York on Monday night, causing widespread flash flooding.
In New York City, Central Park recorded a record-breaking 2.64 inches of rain on July 14, Yahoo News reported.
Tragically, two people died in Plainfield, N.J., on Tuesday after their car was swept away at the height of the storm. According to WABC-TV, emergency crews responded quickly but were unable to save the victims, who were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released.
