President Donald Trump shifted blame away from former President Joe Biden for border policies enacted during the previous administration.
On Tuesday, Trump claimed Biden was not the architect of "open borders" but rather a figurehead manipulated by radical aides using an autopen to sign key orders.
"Joe Biden was not for open borders," Trump declared in a Truth Social post. "It wasn't his idea to open the border... It was the people that knew he was cognitively impaired and that took over the autopen."
Trump accused "radical-left lunatics" of using Biden's name to advance their agenda during his presidency. Speaking to reporters, he claimed bad actors were initially disappointed Biden won the nomination over Sen. Bernie Sanders, but quickly saw an opportunity. "They said, 'Wait a minute, this is a gift. He'll do anything. We're going to use the autopen.'"
The former president did not cite a specific immigration order allegedly signed with an autopen, but raised questions about whether Biden had personally authorized key actions. Trump also cast doubt on Biden's pardons and legislative approvals, hinting they could be "void" due to the use of automated signatures.
After campaigning on the promise to end the "Biden border nightmare," Trump is now suggesting Biden may not have been in control at all. "The Joe Biden that everybody knew would never allow drug dealers, gang members, and the mentally insane to come into our country totally unchecked," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "Look up his record."
The remarks signal a significant rhetorical shift for Trump, who has spent years blaming Biden personally for what he called "open border" policies, even calling it an "invasion". Now, amid Biden's recent prostate cancer diagnosis and reports of limited engagement near the end of his presidency, Trump appears to be targeting the former president's staff instead.
"It's a very, very sad situation, and I feel very badly about it," Trump said of Biden's condition. "And I think people should try and find out what happened."
The Biden team has not responded directly to Trump's claims.
