The Toyota AE86 Corolla is a legend for a reason. The rear-wheel-drive sports car from the mid-1980s became an icon thanks to the Japanese television show Initial D. Now, a Japanese tuner has put the AE86’s front end on a new GR86, including pop-up headlights and all. It looks killer.
The tuner, Result Japan, calls the modded coupe the NEO86, and the company will begin offering the kit this weekend for preorders. Pricing hasn’t been announced, but we expect to know more when the car debuts at this weekend’s Tokyo Auto Salon.
It’s unclear exactly what the kit includes, or what specific modifications Result made to the car, but the car has new squared-off front and rear bumpers, new fender arches, and a new hood that accommodates the awesome-looking pop-up headlights.
The bumpers feel a bit too square for the rest of the GR86’s curvy sheet metal, but they fit. Their black appearance helps them blend in with the rest of the car while adding some retro flair.
It’s unclear if the kit includes any performance modifications, although the coupe appears to ride a bit closer to the ground than stock—but that could be a visual trick. The GR86 features a 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer engine making 228 horsepower or 184 pound-feet of torque.

Motor1’s Take: Who would have thought the AE86’s front end, with a bit of work, would fit the GR86 so well? It might not be the look for everyone, but it’s exciting to see pop-up headlights on a modern sports car, and one that’s affordable, too.
