This Morning in awkward Gareth Southgate blunder following England defeat

This Morning suffered an awkward technical blunder while trying to hear from Gareth Southgate on today's show.

The England manager was speaking to the press on Monday morning following his team's crushing defeat in the Euro 2020 final on Sunday night.

The Three Lions roared their way into their first major tournament in 55 years but dreaded penalties saw Italy crowned winners.

This Morning hosts Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford were chatting to Southgate's former junior school when they said they hadn't got much time due to wanting to cut to the press conference with the man himself.

But the perils of live TV saw viewers shown a shot of a computer screen with a Zoom session open - something we are all too familiar with after 18 months of working from home and lockdowns.

The screen showed desperate attempts for Gareth Southgate to become the beaming picture but instead ITV viewers saw the displays of various members of the press as the manager began to speak.

With the technical issues not getting solved, the show had to result to using a montage of images and video clips as Southgate spoke about his team's Euro 2020 effort and ultimately what went wrong for them on the night.

After a couple of minutes viewers eventually returned to hear from Eamonn and Ruth back in the studio.

But fans of the show weren't letting it go as easily.

"Somebody at ITV doesn't know how to use zoom #thismorning," one tweeted.

Another joked: "2 years of zoom....you'd think they would know how to use it by now #ThisMorning."

"Welcome to the world of a mass zoom call awkward #ThisMorning," a third added.

A fourth said: "This zoom call went well #ThisMorning."

Southgate said in the conference that the team will now "heal together" after their disappointment.

"We heal together as a team now, and we’re there for them, and I know that 99 per cent of the public will be as well," he said.

"Bukayo in particular has been an absolute star in this tournament, incredible maturity and the way he has played has brought a smile to so many people’s faces. He’s become such a popular member of the group and I know he has got everybody’s support."

While he wasn't willing to go to much into his contract negotiations just yet, he did say he wants to lead the team to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
