These may well be the rudest road names in Nottinghamshire

We know it's not big, and it's definitely not clever.

But who doesn't like a rude road name?

If you can drive along Minge Lane, Bell End, or Fanny Hands Lane without sniggering, then frankly you're a better person than us.

Sadly, none of these places are in Nottinghamshire. But what are the rudest street names in our neck of the woods?

Well, in Nottingham itself there are several which have disappeared from the map, such as Blowbladder Street, Butt Dyke and Hore Lane (which is now called Maiden Lane, but whose original meaning probably did relate to the word 'whore').

Paul Cavill, assistant professor in Old English at the University of Nottingham, said that old names are part of our history that are being lost for good reason.

"Generally, old names were designed to be descriptive so that people would know what they would find when they got there," he said.

"The result is that the variety of names of fields and roads is reduced and we often get more generic names like Big Field, Thirty Acre Field, Wheat Field. Urban streets are more varied, but they still tend to be named after local worthies, trees, flowers, or the like."

As an example, you'll find fewer 'Butt Lanes' because modern ploughs can plough right to the edge of the field and don't have to have space at the end - a butt - for the plough to be turned.

Anyway, here's our selection of the rudest roads which are left in Notts - but let us know if you have any better ones.
