England stormed through to the quarter finals thanks to goals from Sterling and Kane
(Picture: Andy Rain, Pool via AP)England has beaten Germany in the last 16 of Euro 2020 to progress to the quarter-finals of the competition with a 2-0 win at Wembley.
Goals from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane in the second half helped the Three Lions beat Joachim Low’s side in a hard-fought game that, in all honesty, took a while to get going.
The first half wasn’t much to write home about with the best chances falling to England but they failed to make the most of the opportunities.
Eventually, the introduction of Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish helped break the deadlock and a neat move allowed Sterling to open the scoring from close range, making it three goals for him in the tournament. Kane, who had struggled to make an impact during the game, then scored shortly after with a header to make it 2-0.
🦁🦁🦁 Incredible scenes at the final whistle!

Understandably, England fans were delighted with the result especially as it was against Germany, who they have only previously beaten twice in major competitions.
Praise was pouring down for nearly every player in the England team.

The last time Germany were this bad against England was about 20 years ago. I feel old and disgusted in equal measure 😂😭

There was praise for Southgate and his management of the match, especially as he was the player who missed the penalty against Germany in 1996. England are still yet to concede a goal during Euro 2020.
Today alone Southgate has done more than any of his recent predecessors. Hard to imagine a more thumping vindication of his set-up than this.

Whatever you think of Gareth Southgate's tactical plan it's hard to argue that this team is not able to carry it out very effectively.

Maybe there was a bit of schadenfreude for the German side, especially Thomas Muller, one of their most experienced players, who missed a gilt-edged chance to equalise. This was Low’s last game in charge of Germany, having announced that he would be leaving the national set-up at the end of this tournament.
