The 1990 Irn-Bru advert that will take you on a retro rollercoaster ride

Prepare to be transported back in time....to the days when Home Alone was in the pictures and Madonna's 'Vogue' topped the charts.

This was of course in 1990 - a year that will be fondly remembered by Glaswegians as one when the city celebrated its status as European Capital of Culture and when we were treated to the sight of a certain Rab C. Nesbitt for the first time on our TV screens.

An old Irn-Bru advert has popped up out of nowhere from the same year - and will no doubt provide for the ultimate Scottish nostalgia trip for folk who watch it.

Glaswegian Alex Glass discovered the "little gem" whilst working on a video from 1990.

The 'Made in Scotland from Girders' ad has everything you might expect it to have - a cheesy (yet ridiculously catchy) Bon Jovi-esque rock song, dodgy haircuts that everyone will be glad to see the back off and even worse clothes.

There's even someone using a pay phone - remember them?

The ad is a blatant send-up of the Coca Cola and Pepsi ads of the era with its vintage cars, American football players, a GI and a wee majorette - providing for a weird juxtaposition of folk who look better suited to a Gap advert clutching 'gingie bottles'.

And with the song having words such as "Wouldn’t you know it / It’s one of those ads / Lots of kids with white teeth and giant shoulder pads / It’s not a drink by those crazy Yanks / Because It’s made right here / You know it’s tougher than tanks / Made in Scotland from girders / Unpronounceable too / Made in Scotland from girders / Barr’s Irn Bru" we can get a further idea.

Granted, seeing people clutch the old cans of Irn-Bru does look very retro-cool, and we bet they would fly off the shelves if they were to bring them back today - even more so if they were stocked in the retro Irn-Bru vending machine that appears at the end.

And it steals the show by becoming sentient and planting a 'malky' on a Yank in true Rab C. Nesbitt style!
