Tesco experienced its busiest days ever over the Christmas period, reporting “strong” growth due to sales of fresh foods as shoppers opted for healthier options.
The busiest days for the supermarket chain were December 22 and 23, the retailer reported.
The supermarket celebrated a 3.7% increase in UK sales in the 19 weeks leading up to January 3, thanks to a shift towards low and zero-alcohol drinks, customers buying different Christmas meats such as beef joints, AI-run deliveries, and a "standout" performance in the sale of fresh food.
Possibly due to the impact of weight-loss jabs, fresh food sales in the UK have risen 6.6% compared to last year, and a whopping 250,000 bottles of alcohol-free prosecco were bought.
Tesco’s Chief Executive Ken Murphy did not make any comment on whether the Wegovy and Ozempic fat-loss injections would be "a material factor" to Tesco or not, explaining that he didn't want to make predictions at this stage.
Mr Murphy went on to say, "But we are seeing a continuation of trends of people wanting to eat more healthy generally".
The injections, which contain a type of medication called GLP-1s, can result in users being less inclined to consume alcohol, eat overly processed foods, and instead, seek fresher foods like lean meats and fruit, and vegetables.
