RTE's Ryan Tubridy gives his honest opinion on Ireland's leaders after listener's Leo Varadkar story

Ryan Tubridy said that the leaders of Ireland's biggest political parties are all "pleasant people" on his morning radio show.

The RTE host was responding after a listener text in to say they met Fine Gael leader Leo Varadkar when out for a cycle.

The texter said they were aware that the former Taoiseach "hated" small talk so instead of chatting, they stood by in silence.

Reading out the listeners text, the Late Late host said: "Not a word was uttered between either party, we were there for about 10 minutes, it could have been awkward but it wasn't, I guess we just respected their right to privacy.

"And normally we are a very chatty group and enjoy meeting other cyclists but it felt right, silence can be golden."

And Tubs continued that it was a respectful thing to do and gave some insight into the people he interviews frequently.

The RTE host said: "I don't know how you knew that he hated small talk, I think he kind of admitted as much himself at one point, he said he's not great at that sort of thing.

"He's actually a very pleasant person in real life, I was thinking about this when I read that, all of Mary Lou McDonald, Micheal Martin, Leo Varadkar when you meet them one on one....they're all very pleasant people with their own lives to lead and families to mind.

"You can lose sight of that sometimes despite of your politics."
