Robocar sets world record for fastest driverless vehicle with top speed of 175 mph

A British-made driverless sports car has set the record for the world's fastest autonomous vehicle.

The car completed two runs at Elvington Airfield in York, which were averaged to produce an official top speed of 282.42kph (175.49mph).

Roborace's Robocar set the record back in March, but it was only published in the 2020 book of Guinness World Records on Friday.

There was no official benchmark to beat, but Guinness World Records set 257kph (160mph) as the unofficial speed that Robocar needed to surpass.

The Robocar was designed by an automotive futurist who has previously created vehicles for Hollywood sci-fi blockbusters Tron Legacy and Oblivion.

Weighing in at 975kg, the car measures 4.8m long and 2m wide, and features four motors packing 300kW of power each.

It uses a number of technologies to "drive" itself including radar, ultrasonic sensors, AI cameras and speed sensors.

The Nvidia Drive PX2 'brain' is capable of carrying out up to 24 million AI operations per second.

It uses deep learning 360-degree situational awareness around the car to compute a safe route.

British start-up Roborace hopes that, in the future, racing teams will all use the same Robocars, but develop their own AI driverless software to gain a competitive advantage.

“Roborace opens a new dimension where motorsport as we know it meets the unstoppable rise of artificial intelligence," said its designer Daniel Simon, Roborace Chief Design Officer.

"Whilst pushing the boundaries of engineering, we styled every single part of the Robocar".

Robocar also wowed at Goodwood Festival of Speed last year, when it became the first self-driving car to complete the event's hill climb.
