Emergency services, including the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service which were called after 9pm, arrived at the scene and the man then climbed on the roof of the home.

Officers set up a cordon in the area which is still in place almost 18 hours later.

Police have now urged the public to not "gather or speculate" on the incident.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At around 5.40pm on Saturday (Sept 18), we received a report of a disturbance at an address in Newcastle.

“It was reported that a man was causing damage inside a property on Wilbury Place, Blakelaw.

“Emergency services attended the scene and as a result the man climbed onto the roof of the address.

"A cordon is in place and specialist officers are currently in attendance to bring the man to safety.

“We would ask nearby residents not to gather or speculate on the incident while we work to bring it to a safe conclusion.”
