Liverpool should try and make a late move for Watford’s Ben Foster before the domestic transfer window closes at 5pm today reckons a Premier League title-winning goalkeeper.
With regular number one Alisson out for approximately six weeks with a shoulder injury, Adrian has been acting as the Brazilian international’s understudy.
However, the Spaniard has come under fire following the Reds’ shocking 7-2 thrashing at Aston Villa in their last match when his early mistake enabled the hosts to score their first goal.
Many observers have urged manager Jurgen Klopp to draft in more cover in the position with Stoke City’s out-of-favour Jack Butland linked, although the ECHO understands Liverpool have zero interest in signing him.
Former England international Tim Flowers, who was a Premier League champion with Blackburn Rovers in 1995, reckons it would still be in the Reds’ interest to try and make a deadline-beating swoop for another Championship keeper who has represented the Three Lions though.
The Express quote Flowers as telling the Kelly and Wrighty Show: “I'm surprised they never went to the market.
“I'll be very surprised if they go for Jack Butland because he's making mistakes playing in the Championship.
“If they were going to go the Championship, I would think they'd go and get the best goalkeeper in the Championship.
“They're in that market now. I'd go and get a Ben Foster. Someone who's got that wealth of experience who you know who will go in there where your back four you will think, 'yeah, we've got him behind us, we know'.”
Former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips, who started his professional career at Watford, has also advised Liverpool to make a move for Foster while ex-Liverpool keeper Chris Kirkland reckons neighbours Everton should have gone for the 37-year-old instead of Robin Olsen when it came to identifying additional competition for Jordan Pickford.
