Iran’s president rejects Trump’s call for surrender on eighth day of conflict

  • Iran's president, Masoud Pezeshkian, rejected the United States' demand for an unconditional surrender, calling it a “dream that they should to take to their grave”.
  • His statement was broadcast after explosions occurred at Tehran’s Mehrabad airport, Iran's busiest commercial and domestic hub, with footage showing a burning plane.
  • The president also apologised for Iran's attacks on regional countries, insisting that Tehran would halt them and suggesting they were caused by miscommunication in the ranks.
  • The incident followed comments from Donald Trump, who had reportedly expressed interest in deploying a limited US force. He has also stated overnight that the US military was doing “phenomenally” against Iran.
  • US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned on Friday of an imminent “biggest bombing campaign” designed to inflict significant damage on Iranian missile launchers and manufacturing facilities.
