Gun scare near White House: Person shot by law enforcement at Washington Monument; lockdown briefly imposed

An individual was shot by law enforcement near the Washington Monument in Washington, DC on Monday, prompting a brief security lockdown at the nearby White House.

The United States Secret Service confirmed that personnel were responding to an “officer-involved shooting” at 15th Street and Independence Avenue. “One individual was shot by law enforcement,” the agency said in a statement.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the condition of the person who was shot or the exact circumstances leading to the incident.

A spokesperson for the local fire department told news agency AP that emergency responders transported an adult male to hospital, while a teenage male was being treated for minor injuries.

The Secret Service urged the public to avoid the area as emergency crews continued operations.

The incident occurred not far from the White House, where US President Donald Trump was holding a small business event at the time.

Security protocols were briefly activated, with the White House placed under lockdown and journalists outside escorted into the briefing room. However, Trump’s event continued without interruption, as per AP.

The shooting comes just over a week after an attempted attack at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, adding to heightened security concerns in the US capital.
