Google announces its biggest acquisition in 28-year history

  • Google has announced its largest acquisition to date, purchasing Israeli cybersecurity firm Wiz for $32bn, which is more than double its previous record acquisition of Motorola Mobility.
  • Wiz, founded just six years ago, rapidly became valuable due to its AI-powered, 'agentless' approach to detecting cloud vulnerabilities and protecting sensitive data across all major cloud providers.
  • The acquisition aims to enhance Google's cloud security offerings and integrate advanced AI capabilities, with Google saying it will “improve cloud security and enable organisations to build fast and securely across any cloud or AI platform”.
  • Despite the deal being originally announced in July 2025, it faced scrutiny from regulators over competition concerns, but the European Commission granted unconditional antitrust approval last month.
  • Critics fear that while Wiz says it will remain a multi-cloud platform, its integration into Google could lead to ”soft degradation” of support for rival platforms, potentially pushing customers towards Google Cloud and allowing Google to monopolise cloud security.
