Georgian rugby official arrested on suspicion of shooting player

Georgia's preparations for the upcoming Autumn Nations Cup against Ireland, England and Wales have been thrown into chaos following the arrest of the vice president of the country's rugby union, Merab Beselia.

The arrest followed the shooting of Ramaz Kharazishvili, the former captain of Georgian national Sevens team. Kharazishvili was shot in the leg at the sport's governing body's offices in the capital Tbilisi yesterday.

The 32-year-old underwent surgery and his life is not in danger, doctors said.

Georgian police launched an investigation into the illegal purchase, possession and carrying of a firearm and damage to health.

After it was decided that Japan would not participate in the newly-formed Nations Cup, Georgia got the nod from Six Nations Rugby to compete in the eight-country tournament.

Andy Farrell's Ireland are pencilled in to face Georgia in the third round of games on Sunday, November 29 at the Aviva Stadium.
