France's president Emmanuel Macron on Sunday joined leaders from across the world to offer support to Donald Trump after a gun attack during the American president's annual gala dinner in Washington with journalists.

"The armed attack on targeting the president of the United States is unacceptable. Violence has no place in a democracy," Macron said on social media.

"I extend my full support to Donald Trump."

Keir Starmer, the British Prime Minister, said he was shocked by the scenes at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday night.

“Any attack on democratic institutions or on press freedom must be condemned in the strongest possible terms,” Starmer said on his social media account on Sunday.

Trump, his wife, Melania, as well as other top politicians, were evacuated from the venue after a man armed with guns and knives stormed the lobby of the Washington Hilton Hotel and opened fire.

A security agent was hit in a part of his body that was protected and was not injured, an FBI official told Reuters news agency.

A 31-year-old man identified as Cole Tomas Allen was taken into custody, said police. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said charges relating to the attack will be filed on Sunday.

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, said that he and his wife Sara were shocked by the incident.

“We are relieved that the President and the First Lady are safe and remain strong,” Netanyahu wrote on his X account.

“We wish the injured police officer a swift and full recovery and commend the US Secret Service for their quick and decisive action.”

Mark Carney, the Canadian Prime Minister, said he was relieved that the president, the First Lady, and all the guests were safe.

“Political violence has no place in any democracy, and my thoughts are with all those shaken by this troubling event,” Carney wrote on social media.

The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, the Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum as well as the Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif were among other well-wishers.

“Violence is never the answer," said the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. "Humanity will only progress through democracy, coexistence, and peace."

About an hour after being escorted out of the dining hall, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform: "What a night in Washington! The Secret Service and the police did a fantastic job."

Footage shared by the US president on Truth Social showed a person rushing past a checkpoint, catching security staff off guard before they could draw their weapons.

"You know, he sprinted about 50 metres. He was a long way from the room. He was moving forward. He was moving really fast," said Trump.
