The ex-Coast Guard lieutenant arrested for allegedly threatening to assassinate President Donald Trump had previously criticized the attempted assassin from Butler, Pennsylvania, while also offering alternative methods to kill the president, including raising funds for a "contract hit."

Peter Stinson, a former U.S. Coast Guard sharpshooter who lives in Oakton, Virginia, served from 1988 to 2021 and later worked as an instructor for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). According to investigators, he also self-identifies as a member of ANTIFA, CBS News reported.

The FBI filed an affidavit Friday accusing Stinson of making threats against President Trump. The affidavit stated that Stinson allegedly made multiple threats against Trump on social media between 2020 and 2025.

He allegedly suggested using a gun, knife or poison to carry out an assassination and expressed regret over lacking the skill to do it himself, offering instead to "serve in a support capacity" or help raise funds for a "contract hit" for which he offered to contribute $100.

Just days after the 2024 attempted assassination of Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, 64-year-old Stinson reportedly wrote, "Just three inches and today would be a different day," followed by criticism of the shooter's abilities.

In another post shared just last Wednesday, Stinson wrote, "When he dies, the party is going to be yuge." He came to the FBI's attention after someone tagged FBI Director Kash Patel in one of his Instagram posts, according to 7News.

On Monday, a federal judge ordered that Stinson remain in custody until his preliminary hearing, scheduled for Wednesday. His attorney declined to comment, per CBS News.
