Dozens of Jan. 6 rioters file class-action suit accusing cops of excessive force

  • A class-action lawsuit has been filed against the federal government by members of the Proud Boys and dozens of individuals convicted or accused in connection with the January 6 riot.
  • The lawsuit, representing at least 46 people and potentially thousands, alleges law enforcement used excessive force, including tear gas and "Billy clubs," against what they claim was an "overwhelmingly peaceful" crowd.
  • Plaintiffs, some of whom received clemency under Trump's mass pardons, are seeking at least $18 million in damages for alleged bodily injury, emotional distress, and other harms.
  • Among the named plaintiffs are Dominic Pezzola and Christopher Worrell, both Proud Boys members convicted of assaulting officers.
  • The lawsuit emerges amidst a broader context where Trump has issued pardons and his administration has targeted federal prosecutors involved in January 6 cases, with a White House website blaming law enforcement for escalating tensions.
