Dow Jones Futures: Trump Tariffs Spark Market Losses; Palantir Plunges On Earnings

Dow Jones futures, along with S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq 100 futures, traded modestly lower ahead of Tuesday's open following Monday's stock market losses.

Palantir Technologies was a big earnings movers after the market close, while Nvidia and Tesla were losers on the stock market today, as the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped nearly 100 points.

Palantir plunged nearly 8% in extending trading Monday even after the company raised its full-year revenue forecast. The firm met first-quarter earnings targets and topped revenue estimates.

Other earnings movers included Diamondback Energy, Ford Motor, and Vertex Pharmaceuticals. Shares of Diamondback climbed 0.7%, while Ford stock lost 2%. Finally, Vertex sold off 3.4% late.

Nvidia declined 0.6%, ending a two-day win streak and testing resistance around the 50-day moving average, a key area to watch. And Nvidia stock fell another 0.5% in extended trading.

Finally, Tesla skidded 2.4%, still setting resistance at the long-term 200-day line. Shares have been below that level since a sharp breach in early March and are still nearly 43% off their record high 488.54, reached on Dec. 18. Tesla stock headed down 0.6% in late trading.

Stock Market Today: Trump Tariff News; Fed Meeting Looms

On Sunday night, President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that he would impose a 100% tariff on movies made outside the U.S., declaring foreign film production a "national security threat." In response, Netflix and Disney declined more than 5% and roughly 3%, respectively, in premarket trading.

Trump also said Sunday that he expects to lower China tariffs "at some point," but he once again said Beijing has been ripping America off, equating trade surpluses with stealing. He said has no plans to speak with President Xi Jinping this week, adding that U.S. and Chinese officials are talking about "different things."

Later this week, the Federal Reserve meeting and policy update Wednesday will take the economic spotlight. Markets see little chance of a rate cut, so the focus will be on Fed Chairman Jerome Powell's news conference, and on any shift in his thoughts on how tariffs will affect inflation.

Big earnings report this week include Disney, along with Arista Networks, Fortinet, Paycom Software and Shopify.
