The bestie breakup that everyone has been eagerly anticipating is going down RIGHT NOW and we’re at the receipts stage of the social media squabble. I am, of course, referring to Donald Trump and Elon Musk, who have severed their once tight-knit and extremely cringe bromance on Thursday (US time).
Tensions had been simmering between the evil overlord pals after Musk – who supported Trump’s run for president with at least $250 million and has worked for his administration as a senior adviser – said he was “disappointed” by what the president calls his “big beautiful bill”. The legislation includes a mix of tax cuts and enhanced immigration enforcement.
Musk described it as a “massive spending bill” that increases the federal deficit and “undermines the work” of his Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE.

Musk had been popping off on X (formerly Twitter) for days, while Trump remained mostly silent.
Then, after Trump threatened to remove Musk from the group chat, aka cut off government contracts to his companies, including rocket firm SpaceX, which has contracts worth tens of billions of dollars with the government, and tax subsidies to save “billions”, the Tesla founder fired back, claiming Trump had connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
“Elon was ‘wearing thin’, I asked him to leave, I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!” Trump wrote on conservative social media platform Truth.
Trump said the “easiest way to save money” would be to “terminate Elon’s governmental subsidies and contracts”.
“Time to drop the really big bomb: Donald Trump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!” Musk tweeted, adding: “Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out.”
Musk went on to criticise not only Trump’s bill, but also his tariff policy — which has been a cornerstone of Trump’s rhetoric for decades.
He claimed on X that the tariffs would cause a “recession in the second half of this year”. Ouchie mama!!!!!
“Go ahead, make my day,” Musk fired back in response to Trump’s threat.
As of Thursday morning, Musk and Trump had not communicated, according to two sources familiar with the president’s discussions.
Several sources told ABC News that multiple administration officials have tried to personally contact Musk and his team, but their calls and messages have gone unanswered.
