Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler slammed President Donald Trump and the Department of Homeland Security after a staffer of his was handcuffed and briefly detained at his New York City office.

The incident took place last Wednesday as Federal Protective Services (FPS) were conducting a sweep following reports that there were protesters inside Nadler's district office. At the same time there was also a protest outside an immigration court located in the same building.

A Homeland Security spokesperson told Fox news Digital that based on the incidents "FPS officers were concerned about the safety of the federal employees in the office and went to the location to ensure the safety and wellbeing of those present."

The officers then were let inside the office and ran into four people. After saying they were going to conduct a security check, the spokesperson said, "one individual became verbally confrontational and physically blocked access to the office."

"The officers then detained the individual in the hallway for the purpose of completing the security check. All were released without further incident." Footage of the incident shows officers saying that Nadler's staff were "harboring rioters." The staff members can be heard crying.

Nadler reacted to the incident with a statement days later, saying "DHS agents forcefully entered by Congressional office and handcuffed a member of my staff."

"From the outset, my number one concern was for the safety of my staff. While no arrests were made and the situation was quickly deescalated, I am alarmed by the aggressive and heavy-handed tactics DHS in employing in New York City and across the country," reads a passage of Nadler's statement.

"The decision to enter a Congressional office and detain a staff member demonstrates a deeply troubling disregard for proper legal boundaries. If this can happen in a Member of congress's office, it can happen to anyone — and it's happening. I call on President Trump and DHS to halt the use of these dangerous tactics and to abandon use of the expedited removal process which denies due process to immigrants and citizens alike," it concludes.
