Morning everyone. Donald Trump has told Iran to accept a new peace deal or face a new wave of bombing. Tehran is considering the terms but says the US is trying to “force us to surrender”.

We have an exclusive revealing how the Coalition plans to slash net immigration levels by half, advice on how to get a better mortgage deal, and tributes pour in for CNN founder Ted Turner, who has died aged 87.

Australia

  • Winter’s coming | A cold front is expected to bring a wintry blast to much of south-eastern Australia in the coming days. Victoria and Tasmania will see snow flurries.

  • Exclusive | The Coalition is planning to cut Australia’s annual net overseas immigration levels to 150,000-200,000, according to a confidential policy roadmap that also reveals Angus Taylor is preparing to fight a possible early election.

  • Business | Staff at WiseTech have been waiting almost three months to be told if they’re among the 2,000 people the logistics software company is to cut due to advances in AI, with workers criticising the wait as “stressful” and “ridiculous”.

  • Rate chase | After three interest rate rises, our business editor suggests how mortgage holders can get a better deal by shopping around and pushing their existing lender towards their “edge of cliff” rate.

  • Homeward bound | A group of 13 Australian women and children recently released from detention camps in Syria are expected to arrive in Australia today with some of the four women facing possible charges over links to Islamic State.

World

  • Russia protest | The Russian pavilion at the Venice Biennale was forced to shut temporarily after the activist group Pussy Riot staged a chaotic protest against the country’s inclusion in the art festival.

  • ‘Higher intensity’ | Donald Trump has issued a fresh ultimatum to Iran to accept a deal to end the war or face a new wave of US bombing “at a much higher level and intensity than it was before”. It came during a fast-moving day in which China called for a comprehensive ceasefire and there were reports the two sides were close to agreeing on an outline deal. The news was welcomed by the markets, where oil fell below $100 and stocks rose. Our analysis lays out how Trump’s zigzagging diplomacy betrays the weakness of his position. Follow the story live here. Pope Leo has defended himself against Trump’s recent attack, saying he has never supported nuclear weapons.

  • Tsunami alarm | Scientists believe a mega tsunami triggered by a rockslide in Alaska that reached as high as the Empire State Building only missed cruise ships visiting a remote fjord by a matter of hours.

  • ‘Intrepid, fearless’ | Ted Turner, the media mogul who revolutionised television news when he founded CNN, has died aged 87. The boss of his channel called him an “intrepid, fearless” leader. Donald Trump paid tribute to him but said the channel was “too woke”.

  • Charged up | A Mexico City nightclub has gone viral for charging Americans a nearly $300 cover charge, while citizens from any other country pay just $20.
