Carlos Alcaraz produced what he described as the “perfect” performance against Jannik Sinner to win his second US Open and sixth grand slam title, while reclaiming the World No 1 ranking from his rival with a stunning 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory.
Just eight weeks after Alcaraz’s defeat to Sinner in the Wimbledon final, the Spaniard triumphed in New York in what was the third consecutive grand slam final between the pair.

With US president Donald Trump in attendance, and the final delayed by 30 minutes due to security checks that meant the match started while thousands of fans were yet to enter the stadium, Alcaraz was the star attraction as he produced a sensational display.
Alcaraz said it had been his best-ever tournament and agreed with the assessment of his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero that he had ben faultless to earn revenge against Sinner after the Wimbledon final.
“He's right. I think I played perfect,” Alcaraz said. “If I want to win, you know, the US Open, if I want to beat Jannik, I have to play perfect, and I think he was right.” Follow the latest analysis and reaction from the US Open below

Why Carlos Alcaraz’s brilliance leaves Jannik Sinner with one option to reach the next level
13:47 , Jack RathbornAs the cameras started to pan away and the trophy ceremony wound down, Carlos Alcaraz received a tap on the shoulder. He turned around to find Jannik Sinner, who had climbed the steps up to the stage to offer the new US Open champion and World No 1 his congratulations one last time.
There is a deep sense of respect between the young men who have now equally split the last eight grand slam titles between them. But, as in all great rivalries, there is also a healthy dose of obsession to their patterns and behaviours when it comes to looking to beat the other.
Immediately after losing the Wimbledon final to Sinner, Alcaraz turned his focus to getting his own back in New York. The 22-year-old sat down with his coach, the former World No 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero, and pored over the two most recent matches against Sinner at Wimbledon and Roland Garros.

Carlos Alcaraz more 'mature' in US Open victory
11:00 , Jamie BraidwoodFormer World No 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero, who is the coach of Carlos Alcaraz, says the 22-year-old has been more “mature” during the US Open, leading to his most-complete grand slam performance and sixth major title.
“I think he's growing up. It's the way, you know, you turn more years, it's the way of life, natural things that it comes,” Ferrero said.
“I think we are very clear what he has to improve on court and off the court, and I think he's more mature to believe that that's these kind of things he can improve much better for the future.
“Carlos has maybe more variety on his game, and he can do more, like, slice, go to the net, and do more things than maybe Jannik, but I think it helps a lot to change a little bit the way of the games. I would say that the match was perfect for Carlos and the performance was unbelievable.”

Three solid backhand returns before Sinner’s drop shot forces him to the net. He has the pace to return it but it looks like the Italian will land a simple passing shot – but he doesn’t, as Alcaraz volleys it at the net for the game!
The Spaniard holds, and it’s his advantage for now.
BREAK! *Carlos Alcaraz 6-2, 3-6, 2-0 Jannik Sinner
Sunday 7 September 2025 21:20 , Chris WilsonA fist pump from Alcaraz as he approaches the net and the pressure pays off, with Sinner hitting the net to make it 0-30.
Sinner’s next serve is too much though, taking it to 15-30, before he unleashes a superb second serve on the next point to work Alcaraz wide before hitting a shot out of range. 30-all now.
However, there’s an early break point chance here as the Italian goes wide with the cross-court return!
And the Spaniard takes it! Sinner can’t believe he’s missed it!
The Italian goes big on the first serve and Alcaraz somehow finds the return, though it sets Sinner up for an easy forehand winner. Somehow he misplaces it, and we have the first break of the third set!

SECOND SET! Carlos Alcaraz 6-2, 3-6 Jannik Sinner
Sunday 7 September 2025 21:10 , Jamie BraidwoodTurning point? It may have came when Sinner faced a break point right at the start of the second set. Alcaraz could not get his return in play and Sinner began to claw his way back.
After ending the run of Alcaraz points on serve, Sinner finally won an exchange that had the crowd on its feet as he swatted a forehand winner crosscourt, with a previously unflappable Alcaraz losing his serve for just the third time at the tournament with a forehand long.
Sinner serves it out.

SECOND SET! Carlos Alcaraz 6-2, 3-6 Jannik Sinner
Sunday 7 September 2025 21:09 , Chris WilsonA cracking forehand sets up Sinner for the game, though he falls for the slice on the next point and overcooks his return to make it 15-all.
The next rally is one of the points of the match so far, ending after Sinner gets to the net to return the drop shot before jumping into a backhand volley to take the point.
He fires an ace to take it to 40-15 and set point...
And we’re level after Alcaraz overhits a return!

Carlos Alcaraz 6-2, 1-3 Jannik Sinner*
Sunday 7 September 2025 20:45 , Chris WilsonA superb return is followed by a poor one and Alcaraz finds himself 0-15 down.
And Sinner announces himself in the match on the next point! Standing ovations as he gets down well for the forehand half-volley before cushioning a volley across the court for 30-0.
Alcaraz goes long on the next point and we’re at 0-40! Three break points!
And he takes it! A superb game from the Italian, firing a superb passing shot to take the game to love.

*Carlos Alcaraz 6-2, 1-2 Jannik Sinner
Sunday 7 September 2025 20:41 , Chris WilsonMore cheers as Alcaraz works Sinner across the court before getting to the net to cushion over a volley for 15-0.
The second point brings another longer rally, this one won by Sinner as Alcaraz finds the net.
The world number one goes up 30-15 with an ace, before taking 40-15 as he races forward and wrong-foots Alcaraz.
He almost double faults next time, with a let on second service, but he sees out the game.
FIRST SET! Carlos Alcaraz 6-2 Jannik Sinner*
Sunday 7 September 2025 20:28 , Chris Wilson83 per cent of first serves won for Alcaraz, just 61 per cent for Sinner.
An impressive first set for the Spaniard.
FIRST SET! Carlos Alcaraz 6-2 Jannik Sinner*
Sunday 7 September 2025 20:27 , Chris WilsonAlcaraz to serve for the first set then.
It starts well for him, another slip from Sinner allowing him the space for a forehand winner, before the Italian catches the net on the next two points. Great approach play from Alcaraz there.
Three set points, but he only needs one as Sinner can’t find the answer to the next serve.
The Spaniard lands the first blow of the match!

BREAK! *Carlos Alcaraz 5-2 Jannik Sinner
Sunday 7 September 2025 20:24 , Chris WilsonSinner’s serving has been slightly mixed so far, though when he gets it right it usually sets him up for a winning point.
He does so to get back to 15-all, but on the next point it sits up nicely at the net but he drives a backhand out!
15-30 to the Spaniard, and Sinner faults again. He looks a little flustered at present.
Indeed he does, as a return at the baseline can only find the net for 15-40.
Another break point. Sinner faults on first service...but Alcaraz hits the net on the return.
Second break point...and Alcaraz takes it!
Alcaraz rifles a return to the Italian at the net, and Sinner can’t lift the slice over!

Donald Trump returns to the US Open to mixed reception
Sunday 7 September 2025 20:09 , Jamie BraidwoodThe Independent's John Bowden, who travelled with the president on Air Force One to the US Open, sent this dispatch:
President Trump attended the men's finals of the U.S. Open in New York on Sunday, and The Independent is along for the ride. The weather was rainy and warm as Trump arrived in his hometown, and headed to the Billie Jean King tennis center.
Trump was in good spirits for the first leg of the trip. He briefly came back to excitedly note to the press that Air Force One was planning a flyover of the stadium. As he entered his SUV, he told reporters to “have a good time” at the event.
There were plenty of spectators watching the motorcade’s arrival. The president’s appearance before the crowd as the game started drew a massive wave of boos from around the stadium, however.

Carlos Alcaraz 2-0 Jannik Sinner*
Sunday 7 September 2025 20:02 , Chris WilsonAlcaraz certainly started quickly here, and he looks like he’s really set on taking the game to Sinner. Can he back it up with his own serve though?
A mis-placed slice sees him go 0-15, though we’re level after Sinner can only find the net.
A second serve sees Sinner scuff a return into the crowd, before a small slip wrong-foots the Italian for 40-15.
And he rounds off the game with a lovely slice, again wrongfooting the Italian.
