Brixton drive-by shooting leaves four injured, one in critical condition

Four individuals have been wounded as a result of gunshots that were reportedly discharged from a moving car in Brixton, south London, shortly after midnight on Saturday, leading to an intense police investigation and renewed worries regarding the safety of the local community. This event took place around 01:15 BST on Coldharbour Lane, and policemen from the Metropolitan Police arrived promptly following the emergency reports. As reported by the BBC and the Guardian, together with press releases from the Metropolitan Police and the London Ambulance Service, the investigation is ongoing as the suspects responsible for the assault are being sought after.

The 25-year-old man is currently fighting for his life in a hospital. Meanwhile, three other men, aged 21, 47 and 70, were admitted for medical treatment following injuries that were classified by doctors as non life-threatening. All four of the injured persons were treated on-site by paramedics and subsequently transferred to a major trauma centre and another nearby hospital, respectively.

Security personnel secured the immediate area around the Southwyk House estate as well as carried out thorough searches during Saturday and into Sunday morning. A cordon was put up along certain sections of Coldharbour Lane, where the investigation is ongoing. Investigators are examining surveillance video footage and collecting witness statements in order to piece together a timeline of the events that transpired.

Evidently, witnesses described the change from a festive mood to sheer panic in just seconds. According to Moh John, a 45-year-old employee working at a supermarket near the crime scene, he heard gunshots coming from the direction of the gathering taking place in close proximity to his workplace. Several people, who were running for their lives, approached him, forcing him to barricade the door.

Yet another victim, Robert, aged 40, said that although he was inside at the time, he thought there was a big barbecue in the neighbourhood that attracted many people.

Speaking on the investigation, the detective chief inspector Allam Bhangoo referred to the incident as an example of indiscriminate violence and added that the worry was shared by many people from the local community. The investigator said that the team will be working hard to find the suspects and understand their motivation for the crime.
