Biden And Trump Agree To Fall Debate

President Joe Biden confirmed during an interview with Sirius XM radio host Howard Stern that he is open to debating his presumptive Republican opponent, Donald Trump, later this fall. This marks Biden's most definitive statement on the matter to date. The decision comes after Trump expressed readiness for a debate but questioned Biden's willingness.

Previously, Biden's reelection campaign had been non-committal about participating in debates, a longstanding tradition in general election presidential campaigns. Biden had also previously stated that his decision to debate Trump would depend on the former president's behavior.

The Commission on Presidential Debates has already scheduled three general election debates between the candidates for September and October in Texas, Virginia, and Utah. The lone vice presidential debate is set for September in Pennsylvania.

Trump, who did not participate in any Republican primary debates this cycle, has been vocal about his readiness to debate Biden. He suggested potential debate dates coinciding with his campaign schedule and court proceedings for his hush money criminal trial in New York.

Despite Biden engaging in fewer press interviews than his predecessors, his recent interview with Stern covered a range of topics, including his upbringing, family, and favorite president. The interview took on an informal and introspective tone, providing insights into Biden's personal life and views.

The timing of the interview with Stern was coincidental, with the White House working with the host for weeks to arrange the conversation. Stern, known for his conversational interviewing style, has a loyal audience and is adept at drawing out revealing discussions from his guests.
