The city of Chicago is getting into the holiday spirit in a big way.
The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events on Friday announced the annual search for the massive tree to grace Millennium Park and serve as the City’s 107th “official” Christmas tree.
Nominations must come from a Chicago-area location and are being accepted at at dcase@cityofchicago.org through Oct. 23.
The tree will be set up in Millennium Park near the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Washington Street.
Nominated trees must meet the following specifications:
- Be at least 45 feet tall.
- Be located less than 50 miles from Chicago’s Loop, with preference given to trees within 15 miles of Chicago.
- Preferably be a Norway Spruce or Fir; pine trees are ineligible, as they are not sturdy enough.
All submissions must include the owner(s) name, address, phone and email; a brief description of why the tree should be Chicago’s official Christmas tree, including any information about what makes the tree special; and at least two photographs of the tree — one from afar, one up-close.
Details on the official tree lighting will be announced at a later date.
