Amazon announces major changes are coming for Kindle readers

  • Amazon announced it will discontinue support for Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 and earlier, effective May 20.
  • Users of these older devices will no longer be able to purchase, borrow, or download new content from the Kindle store.
  • Existing downloaded books can still be read, but deregistering or factory resetting these devices after May 20 will prevent re-registration.
  • Many users expressed outrage on social media, calling the move a "NIGHTMARE" and lamenting the loss of functional older models.
  • Amazon is offering affected users, who represent about 3% of its current user base, a 20% discount on new devices and book credits to encourage upgrades.
