Garda checkpoints Ireland: Motorist caught for 'dangerous' offence after trying to avoid stop

A huge multi-agency operation has seen multiple motorists caught for breaking road safety rules this week.

Gardai were joined by the Road Safety Authority and the Irish Tyre Industry Association for ‘Tyre Safety Day’ on Wednesday.

Dozens of road users were caught for the same offence at checkpoints across the country.

As the focus was on tyre safety, numerous fines were issued for motorists travelling with defective or worn out tyres.

In a further update from the gardai, they said that they caught one driver after they tried to avoid a checkpoint.

Members of the force in Naas, Co Kildare, observed a vehicle turning away from a checkpoint on the Carragh Road earlier this week.

When stopped, it emerged that the car "had dangerously defective tyres" and it was subsequently seized.

Gardai in Naas have been busy conducting checks on the roads this week as they seized two more cars during a stop.

The vehicles were seized during a stop in Palmerstown for being driven by an unaccompanied learner driver and for not having an NCT.

Fixed Charged Penalty Notices were issued to both drivers.

Using the Mobility App, it was found that the driver was an unaccompanied learner and the car was untaxed.

The driver was subsequently arrested and proceedings will follow.

Elsewhere in Co Laois, gardai were on patrol were in Portlaoise recently when they stopped a car that was "acting suspiciously".

It emerged that the driver had been disqualified. Gardai seized the car and arrested the motorist, who is facing proceedings following the stop.
