Angry UB40 fans storm out of Leeds gig early and slam concert as 'tribute act'

Fans have been complaining about a UB40 gig held at Leeds arena.

In a post on Facebook, Laura Coyle asked people what their opinions of the concert were before she shared her own. She wrote: "Everyone was leaving within 40 mins. We had been sat waiting since half 6, they didn’t come on till just after 9, then they announced a new vocalist singer !

"That’s like going to see Beyoncé and saying she’s not here so we’ve got a new vocalist for you yet charging the same prices! So so many people walked out - it was shocking."

Others agreed and shared the view that the concert wasn't the same without former frontman Ali Campbell, who left in 2008 and formed another group called UB40. Laura Coyle said the band ""never once" mentioned he wouldn't be there.

Another commenter, Sarah Wright, wrote: "Tbh it wasn't great more a tribute act? Didn't play any of the best songs, no atmosphere x."

Lisa Brockman said: "Waited 2yrs & tbh it was more like a tribute act? Didn't play any of there best hits no atmosphere & definitely not the same without Ali Campbell."

There are now two groups called UB40 who tour. One contains former frontman Ali Campbell along with keyboardist Mickey Virtue. Another contains the rest of the members, drummer Jimmy Brown, guitarist Robin Campbell, bassist Earl Falconer, percussionist Norman Hassan and new lead singer Matt Doyle.

However, not everyone agreed with the criticism. Sharon Booth said: "I knew Ali wasn’t going to be with them, Matt was great and I had a thoroughly good time! Good value for money, DJ and two bands with a good atmosphere. A few did walk out who were sitting near us, but there wasn’t any kind of mass exodus, most like us enjoyed it for what it was!"

Christine Waterworth agreed and also said: "We had a ball. It was amazing. Loved the tribute to Terry Hall. Those who expect UB40 of old forget bands change. I thought the new singer was ace. Norman hassan doing his dance was amazing. Good to here the new stuff and the classics."

Linzi Joyce also added: "I enjoyed it, just didn't play enough of the ub40 classics."

Nicola Kelly also said: "I went and loved every minute of it. We all did."
